Selangor rout Penang in men’s table tennis team final
BY LOGANATH VELLOOPRAI: Hosts Penang suffered a heartbreak for the second consecutive year in the men's team final of the national table tennis championship when they were beaten 0-3 by Selangor at the Polytechnic College here yesterday.
Penang, who clinched the title in 2002, lost 2-3 to Sarawak in the championship last year in Kuala Terengganu.
Selangor were in ruthless form with Chan Koon Wah giving them a winning start with a 11-6, 11-6, 11-8 victory over Choo Sim Guan.
Chit Sheng put Selangor 2-0 up with an 11-7, 11-5, 10-12, 11-4 win over Peng Jia Ping.
And Jong Ming Shing clinched the title for Selangor with a 10-12, 11-4, 11-8, 11-5 win over Leow Khang Heng.
Earlier in the day, Selangor ended Sarawak's hopes of a second consecutive title, winning the semi-final tie 3-2. Penang overcame a strong challenge from Kuala Lumpur, powered by Sukma (Malaysia Games) gold medallist Muhamad Shakirin Ibrahim, by the same scoreline in the other semi-final.
In the women's team event, Kedah clinched a hat-trick of titles – beating Sabah 3-0 in a repeat of last year's final.
The Kedah team, powered by national paddlers Beh Lee Fong and Beh Lee Wei, did not drop a single game in all their six ties en route to the title.
In he final, Ng Sock Khim gained the first point for Kedah with a hard fought 7-11, 11-6, 11-9, 12-10 win over Chiu Soo Jiin.
Lee Wei made it 2-0 without hitting a ball as her opponent Pong Vui Mei conceded a walkover. And her sister, Lee Fong, sealed victory with an easy 11-4, 11-5, 11-6 win over Lam See Vui.
However, Sabah gained some consolation when they bagged the non-Chinese women's team title. Kelantan won the men's non-Chinese team event beating KL 3-0 in the final.

Quarter-finals: Sarawak bt Perak 3-1; Selangor bt Malacca 3-0; K. Lumpur bt Johor 3-0; Penang bt Kedah 3-2.
Semi-finals: Selangor bt Sarawak 3-2; Penang bt K. Lumpur 3-2.
