Petronas places all operations on alert after quake

KUALA LUMPUR: Petronas has placed all its operations throughout the country on alert mode and is closely monitoring the situation following the earthquake off Sumatra.

The earthquake, the most powerful since 1964, triggered massive tidal waves that slammed into coastlines across Asia, killing thousands.

However, Petronas said in a statement here yesterday that none of its onshore and offshore facilities and installations throughout the country was affected by the incident except for a floating refuelling facility at the Telaga Harbour Park at Pantai Kok in Langkawi.

The facility was damaged after being hit by two yachts due to high waves experienced at the harbour, it said.

“The valves to the dispensing units at the facility were immediately shut off and the electricity supply was isolated,” it said.

Petronas also said that following the tremor, the skybridge at the Petronas Twin Towers at Level 41 was closed to the public as a precautionary measure.

The building's manager, KLCC Urusharta Sdn Bhd (KLCC Urusharta) conducted an inspection on the towers and its installations and found that the towers did not suffer any damage.

The statement said that KLCC Urusharta would today request the original civil and structural engineers as well as mechanical and electrical engineers for the towers to further inspect the building and certify that it is safe. – Bernama
