Najib: We are monitoring epicentre of Aceh quake

KUALA LUMPUR: The Government is monitoring the epicentre of the Sumatra earthquake to determine when it is safe for evacuees to go home, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“If the aftershocks are below 4.5 on the Richter Scale, then we can be more confident that there will not be any more tsunamis,” he said.

Najib said there were about 3,500 evacuees in Kedah and 800 in Penang, adding that the Government hoped the evacuees could return home before the new school term on Jan 2.

He said the Government did not expect the disaster to affect the economy.

“There might be some setbacks in the affected areas but it will be temporary,” he said after opening the Felda Entrepreneurs Symposium and Exposition at the Putra World Trade Centre here yesterday.

At another function later, Najib said Malaysia would despatch the Special Malaysian Disaster Relief and Rescue Team (Smart) for rescue work in Aceh.

To another question, Najib said the Government had not made any decision on whether it would extend the amnesty period for illegal immigrants to leave the country following the tsunami in Sumatra.
