PM offers aid to Aceh

LANGKAWI: Malaysia will help Indonesia in whatever way it can for the rehabilitation of Aceh which was severely hit by Sunday’s tsunami, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said.

He said he conveyed this to Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono when the latter called him yesterday.

He said Susilo told him that Aceh had used up all its facilities.

Abdullah said he told Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak to handle the matter, adding that essential items could be flown to Aceh using the Hercules plane if needed.

He said this to reporters after visiting victims at the relief centre at Kuala Teriang Primary School here yesterday.

He also said he appreciated the swift action by several large organisations in cancelling their New Year celebrations.

He said they included Petronas, Ambank and TV3, adding that this meant there would not be any major celebration tomorrow night.

The celebrations were supposed to be held at the KLCC Park and Merdeka Square in Kuala Lumpur.

On well-wishers who want to give aid directly to the tidal wave victims, Abdullah advised them to inform the authorities responsible in the particular area so that only those eligible would get the aid.

On the effect of the calamity on the tourism industry in Penang and Langkawi, he said he had not received feedback on the matter yet.
