Be cautious with seaside activities, NS chiefs told
SUBANG JAYA: National Service (NS) camp commanders have been advised to be extra cautious when conducting water activities near beaches following the recent tsunami episode.
The department’s director-general Kamaruddin Mohamed Baria said the safety of the trainees was always taken into account and close supervision would be given when these activities were carried out.
“We have informed them to be extra careful when conducting activities near the sea. These activities will be cancelled if there is any sign of danger,” he said yesterday.
However, he said no water activities were being carried out presently as physical training programmes were ongoing.
Kamaruddin also said the department would discuss with state government secretariats to bring forward the community service activities, set to be held in February.
He said the department would suggest to the secretariats to include activities like cleaning up the tsunami-affected areas.
“The training for this batch of trainees is running smoothly and is not affected by the tsunami disaster,” he said.
MCA Youth secretary-general and NS inspector Loh Seng Kok said outdoor activities like going to the beach should be avoided during the programme.
“They are young and it is very hard for the trainers to control them if they go swimming in the sea, where the current might still be strong.”
He also said the NS trainees should also help tsunami victims rebuild their homes.
