Postman brings a cheer to victims

SUNGAI PETANI: Tsunami or not, postman Kamaruzzaman Md Arshad makes it a point to deliver letters.

Kamaruzzaman, 44, used to go house to house in 13 villages to deliver letters in Kota Kuala Muda until the giant waves hit these places and made 988 families homeless on Sunday.

He now delivers letters at the SK Kota Kuala Muda and the nearby SK Haji Sulaiman relief centres, which houses most of the affected families.

He also delivers letters to another six relief centres, which include community halls and suraus, in the town.

FULL OF DEDICATION: Kamaruzzaman delivering letters to villagers at the SK Kota Kuala Muda Thursday.
Attached to the Tikam Batu post office, near Kota Kuala Muda, Kamaruzzaman was happy he could bring a little cheer to the victims by delivering letters directly to them.

“I know most of the affected families personally and can identify them by their names.

“I can see their faces light up when they receive their letters and that makes me happy,” he said.

Kamaruzzaman, who had been a postman for over 10 years, said most of the 200 and 300 letters delivered daily were now sent to the relief centres.

Assisting him voluntarily now is another postman Norizan Bajuri, 27, from Bagan Dalam post office in Butterworth.

Norizan, who is on leave, said he came back to Kota Kuala Muda because his parents were among the tsunami victims seeking shelter at SK Kota Kuala Muda.
