Spain pack off Brazil to set up final with Italy in futsal meet

TAIPEI: Spain booked their place in the FIFA Futsal World Championship final on Friday with a 5-4 penalties win over Brazil after the two teams were tied 2-2 after regular time.

Spain will contest today's final against Italy, who downed Argentina 7-4 in the other semi-final.

Spain ended an unbeaten run for Brazil at this year's championship after opening the scoring with a goal from Andreu in the 23rd minute. Marcelo scored 12 minutes later and the Spaniards held on to force a goalless extra time.

Brazil's goals came from Pablo and Simi.

Vinicius Bacaro grabbed three goals to lead Italy past Argentina. Italy finished the preliminary round top of the Group C standings and lead the Group E second round standings on their way to the semi-finals.

Spain, who finished the first round of this tournament atop Group A, came second in second round Group E to advance to the final four.

Brazil won the first three editions of the Futsal World Championships before being narrowly defeated by Spain in the fourth championship, held in Guatemala in 2000.

Futsal, or indoor soccer, is played by five players per side over two 20-minute periods. The playing surface is the size of a basketball court. – AP
