Play football with joy, Maradona tells Bolivians

COCHABAMBA (Bolivia): Diego Maradona says football on television is not very attractive these days.

The retired Argentine star was in Bolivia on Friday to attend the inauguration of a football school for children directed by his friend Daniel Valencia, a member of Argentina’s 1978 world champion team.

Maradona urged the Bolivian players “to play good football, to dominate the ball, play with joy”.

“That’s what is lacking on television these days,” he said.

“They announce a match supposed to be great, full of good players, but the least one sees is pretty action.''

Maradona presented the children of the Tahuichi football school with a new ball, but flatly turned down requests to play at least a few minutes in a match between two local teams organised to honour him.

“Absolutely no,” he said. But then he suggested he may present the crowd with a show of his skill.

“I have not forgotten how to handle the ball. I have no problem with that,” he said.

Maradona’s schedule in Bolivia included a dinner attended by President Carlos Mesa. – AP
