No pension for banned Azharuddin

NEW DELHI: Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin, banned for life for involvement in match-fixing, has been left out of a pension scheme for the country’s Test players.

The plan, under which 174 Test players and umpires will receive 5,000 rupees (US$113.2) per month, was announced as part of the India’s national cricket board’s 75th anniversary celebrations.

“As far as we’re concerned, Azhar has been banned by the board,” Karunakaran Nair, secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), said yesterday.

Former Test batsman Ajay Jadeja, whose appeal against his five-year match-fixing ban was upheld by a court-appointed arbitrator last year, has been included in the scheme.

In 2000, Azharuddin and batsman Ajay Sharma were banned for life, while all rounder Manoj Prabhakar and Jadeja were suspended for five years, after a board inquiry into a federal report on corruption in cricket. – Reuters
