Bolivia coach Acosta threatens to resign

LA PAZ: Bolivia coach Nelson Acosta has threatened to resign following discussions with the country’s football federation should clubs not do more to help him prepare for World Cup qualifiers.

Two days after Bolivia’s 2-0 home defeat to Chile which brought calls for his resignation, Acosta spoke of the need for change.

Bolivia have just three points from five matches and are bottom of the 10-nation table of South American 2006 World Cup qualifiers.

Acosta said during a press conference: “If these conditions are not met, I cannot risk tarnishing my reputation. If I do not have the right conditions I cannot work.”

He added if Bolivian First Division clubs did not do more to release players by giving the international team more of a priority, he would leave the job.

“I have no problem about walking out,” he continued.

He had had a five-hour meeting with an FBF committee to explain the performance of the team against Chile and it is believed he still has the backing of FBF president Walter Castedo.

A final decision on Acosta’s future is set to be decided today during a meeting of the FBF and the Bolivian Football League which organise the 12-team championship.

Castedo also said he was ashamed, bitter and hurt following Chile’s first ever World Cup victory in Bolivia.

“The team were a disaster,” Castedo said. “There were errors all over the pitch and to see the supporters so disappointed is not easy to bear. How am I going to feel in this situation? That was not the Bolivian team I am used to seeing.” – AFP
