Two missing after landslide in Kyrgyzstan
BISHKEK, Kyrgyzstan (AP): A father and son were missing and feared dead after they were apparently buried under a landslide in southern Kyrgyzstan, officials said Tuesday.
The landslide occurred Monday near Kara-Batkak village in Karakolja district, 700 kilometres (435 miles) south of the capital, Bishkek, said Emergencies Ministry spokesman Emil Akmatov.
The 35-year-old father and his 14-year-old son were missing and believed to have been buried by falling mud and rocks, Akmatov said. Rescue workers were searching for them, he added.
Landslides are common in this mountainous Central Asian nation, especially during spring thaws. The slides killed at least 38 people last month in the country's south.
Kyrgyz officials have appealed for international help to cover costs of relocating residents from landslide-prone areas.
