UiTM duo reach Everest’s peak

SHAH ALAM: Two Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) students have become the first tertiary students from South-East Asia to reach the peak of Mount Everest.

UiTM vice-chancellor Datuk Seri Prof Ibrahim Abu Shah confirmed that Muhammad Muqharaddin Mokhtaruddin, and Ahmad Reduan Rozali, both 22, reached the peak at about 10.50am yesterday.

He said Muhammad Muqharaddin, from the Faculty of Sports Science and Ahmad Reduan, of the Faculty of Applied Science, began climbing to the 8,850m peak of the mountain on Wednesday.

“They have been in contact with me and calling call me every few days. They were both in high spirits and in good condition when they told me about their achievement this morning. I’m happy that they are safe,” he said in an interview.

Ibrahim said the duo were expected to descend to base camp by May 23.

The two had sought to emulate the feat by M. Magendran and N. Mohandass, the first Malaysians to reach the peak.

At the 33rd National Teachers’ Day celebration at Malawati Stadium here yesterday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi commended the feat by the students,

“That is the achievement of those of distinction to reach the peak of Mount Everest,” he told reporters when asked.

“Alhamdullillah, I’m happy with their success. Not everybody is capable of achieving such a feat,” he added.
