Wrong target Return of real Raul

LISBON: New water cannon vehicles for hooligan control at Euro 2004 hit the wrong target on Tuesday when they doused two government ministers and other officials.

Interior Minister Antonio Figueiredo Lopes and the minister in charge of sports, Jose Luis Arnaut, got soaked at the demonstration of new riot equipment for Portuguese police when the jet of water briefly swung their way, the national news agency Lusa reported.

Figueiredo Lopes said 400 new vehicles, bomb disposal devices, truncheons and shields are among the new equipment which cost 12.4 million euros ($14.8 million).

“Our security forces will be ready for Euro 2004,'' Figueiredo Lopes said.

The three-week tournament begins June 12.

Return of real Raul MADRID: Spain coach Inaki Saez said he is confident that captain Raul Gonzalez will emerge from his lean spell when he leaves his club side Real Madrid and joins Spain's Euro 2004 squad for the championships.

Raul's form has dipped during Madrid's surprise collapse in the latter part of the season which has left the defending league champion without a trophy this season.

The striker, Spain's all-time leading scorer with 38 goals in 71 matches, last scored in the league two months ago. His overall 11-goal tally is his lowest since the 1997-98 season.

“I'm not worried about Raul. If all problems were like this one ...,'' Saez said in an interview with Radio Marca. “I know he's really excited and he'll be geared up. Raul has the type of character that always wants more. I'm sure Raul will be Raul again in the European championships,'' Saez said.

The Chinese version is at cn.euro2004.com– AP
