Two die, 24 hurt in crash involving double-decker bus

IPOH: A double-decker express bus crashed into the back of a trailer, killing two people and injuring 24 others.

State traffic chief Supt Hamza Taib said the impact caused the bus to swerve off the road and plunge about 30m into a ravine before landing on its side during the 3.15am incident at the North-South Expressway near Gua Tempurung, Gopeng, yesterday.

The dead were identified as express bus driver Zubir Bakar, 48, and teacher Zainal Azhar Hussain, 44.

Supt Hamza said those warded at Tapah Hospital were Abdullah Othman, 66, Low Han Meng, 57, Shamser Ali Nordin, 44, and Mohd Shanpuddin Mohktar, 21.

He said three other passengers Mohd Sabri Johari, 34, Che Mat Asari Awang, 40 and Teoh Kim Choi, 50, were warded at Ipoh Hospital.

Nineteen people, including the trailer driver and assistant, received out-patient treatment at Tapah Hospital.

Teacher Arbaayah Abu Bakar, 46, was in tears when she learnt that her friend Zainal from Kolej Sultan Abdul Hamid in Alor Star had died.

Arbaayah, 46, from SM Tunku Putera, Langkawi said the bus was on its way to Kuala Lumpur from Alor Star.

“As the seat beside me was empty I changed seats with Zainal who was bigger than me.

“Now, I feel guilty for doing so,” said Arbaayah.

After the accident, the passengers on the upper deck were trapped for a few minutes until someone used a piece of wood to open the air-vents at the top of the bus.

“We crawled out and some of the passengers called their family members and the police on their cellphones,” she said.
