England’s teen striker draws comparison with Brazilian great

LISBON: Comparisons with Pele may be a little too much.

But 18-year-old Wayne Rooney even upstaged two-goal Thierry Henry at Euro 2004 on Monday to put England into the quarter-finals with two more high quality strikes that both the Brazilian great and the French star would have been proud of.

The powerfully built striker made it a championship high four goals in two games with a 22-metre strike, and then scored a casual placement as England beat Croatia 4-2 at the Stadium of Light.

Now he gets a chance to break the hearts of the hosts as England takes on Portugal in the same stadium tomorrow in the quarter-finals. Defending champion France meet upstart Greece the following day at Lisbon's Jose Alvalade Stadium.

France beat Switzerland 3-1 with Henry scoring his first two goals of the competition.

Monday's results left France atop the standings in Group B with seven points. England finished on six. Croatia placed third and Switzerland last.

The Czech Republic have also reached the quarter-final from Group D. Two qualifiers were decided yesterday in Group C with Sweden, Denmark and Italy as the contenders (results not available at press time).

The contenders for the remaining spot from Group D are Germany, Holland and Latvia. The Germans play against the Czechs today while the Dutch will be up against the Latvians. – AP
