Bid to stop political parties from abusing religion
From the Chinese PressTHE Government has banned new political parties from registering under the name of religion to prevent confusion among the public, Sin Chew Daily reported.
Home Minister Datuk Azmi Khalid told the daily that the Government was concerned that certain parties were disguising their organisations in the name of religion while their activities were political in nature.
Azmi said the Government disapproved of such organisations and would beef up enforcement against those abusing religion for political gains.
However, he said the ruling would not affect non-governmental organisations that had been registered under the name of a religion.
If NGOs (operating) under the guise of religion are found to be involved in politics, their permit will be revoked, he said.
Sin Chew also highlighted that Gerakan became the second Barisan Nasional component party, after MCA, to advise its elected representatives to stay away from nightclubs and discotheques in order to maintain a healthy public image.
Gerakan president Datuk Seri Dr Lim Keng Yaik said representatives should avoid functions considered incompatible to their status and other time-wasting activities.
He said that unlike the MCA, Gerakan would not issue a guidebook of dos and don'ts on how the representatives should behave. The advice would be channelled during a brainstorming session for the party's elected representatives at the end of the month.
