Ferguson offers fitness job to Real’s Valter

LONDON: Alex Ferguson has decided to appoint the man England captain David Beckham blamed for poor fitness at Euro 2004.

The Manchester United manager has offered a job to Real Madrid’s health guru Valter di Salvo. Old Trafford No. 2 Carlos Queiroz, who lasted only a season as Real Madrid coach, has persuaded Ferguson the 40-year-old Italian can help lead United’s revival.

When England crashed out against Portugal in the quarter-finals, Beckham claimed his fitness and stamina levels at Real had not matched those he enjoyed at United.

Queiroz, back at United after being sacked by Real, blasted Becks as a slack pro who always looks for excuses to explain his lack of form.

Fellow Real midfielder Luis Figo also quizzed Beckham’s fitness claims.

The Portugal skipper pointed out he had done exactly the same kind of work and was in top condition all the way to the Euro 2004 final.

Di Salvo, who worked for Sven Goran Eriksson when the England coach was in charge of Lazio, is a believer in using hi-tech methods to measure fitness. –AFP
