Dr Mahmud said a team of specialists from the National Heart Institute in Kuala Lumpur was expected to arrive at the hospital last night.
It is learnt that shortly after waking up at about 4am, Nik Aziz called his wife and some of his children to his side.
Already unwell and complaining of chest pains, he told them he wanted to cancel a planned umrah trip with some family members and aides on Aug 1.
He asked them to donate the money (to be used for the trip) to the poor.
He then performed his tahajjud prayers (obligatory prayers before the mandatory subuh prayers) and then his subuh prayers before his family accompanied him to the Perdana Specialist Medical Centre here in an ambulance.
State government spokesman Husam Musa said the 73-year-old spiritual adviser to PAS was brought to the hospital from his house in Pulau Melaka at about 6am.
Husam, the state Finance and Public Administration Committee chairman, said heart specialist Dr Ibrahim Abdullah had told him that Nik Aziz will be given medication and may have to undergo an operation within two days.
Dr Ibrahim also said Nik Azizs heart was weak and there may be coronary complications.
On the whole, however, his condition does not look that bad, Husam told reporters after visiting the Mentri Besar at the hospital in the afternoon.
In a phone interview with The Star in Petaling Jaya later, Husam said Nik Aziz was conscious but still very weak.
He added: The doctors are considering heart surgery for Tok Guru (as Nik Aziz is fondly called by followers) in the next two days when his condition stabilises.
Husam said that except for his son, ISA detainee Nik Adli, all members of the Mentri Besars family were at his bedside.
Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Noh Omar said arrangements were being made for Nik Adli to visit his father.
He was expected to arrive at the hospital from the Kamunting camp at 11pm.
Kelantan Deputy Mentri Besar Ahmad Yakob said Nik Aziz appeared more stable.
He said medical specialists who examined Nik Aziz found that he has a slight heart case and very high blood pressure.
Hundreds of well-wishers made a beeline for the hospital on hearing the news about their leader. However, the ICU ward was only opened to his immediate relatives.
