Johnson to help train Nazmizan while in Athens

KUALA LUMPUR: Sprinter Nazmizan Mohamed will get help from American Michael Johnson in his training in Athens ahead of the 200m event in the Olympics.

Nazmizan, who is a wild card entry for the race, had trained under the 200m world record holder at his club in Texas for three months.

“Johnson will be arriving in Athens on Aug 10 with his club athletes who will be competing in the Olympics. He has promised to help me in training in Athens,” said the 23-year-old Nazmizan, who will leave for Games on Monday.

“My competition is on Aug 23 and I will get to train with Johnson for almost two weeks.’’

Nazmizan won the sprint double in the Vietnam SEA Games but failed to beat the Olympic qualifying mark in either the 100m or 200m. He recorded a series of poor results during his training stint under Johnson in Texas.

He holds a personal best of 21.05, which won him the 200m gold medal at the SEA Games. The national, record is 20.92 and it was recorded by Datuk Dr M. Jegathesan at the 1968 Mexico Olympics.

Jegathesan is the chef-de-mission of the contingent for the Athens Games.
