One-stop agency to help ease public transport woes
BY LAM LIKUALA LUMPUR: The soon to be set up Klang Valley Urban Transport Authority (KVUTA) will be the one-stop agency to plan, implement and enforce policies aiming to ease the transport woes of folks in the capital city and its surrounding areas.
Solving massive traffic jams, reviving the under-utilised public transport and introducing a one-ticket system are among the immediate tasks of KVUTA.
Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy said over 10 government agencies under various ministries including Transport, Finance, Federal Territory, Entrepreneur and Co-operative Development would be absorbed into KVUTA.
It will take over the fragmented duties currently carried out by various unrelated agencies.
This will ensure better co-ordination in the future and lead to better results, he said after attending a ground breaking ceremony of SJK(C) Kuen Cheng II yesterday.
Chan was commenting on the functions of KVUTA, which was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi when tabling the budget 2005 on Friday.
The premier had said that traffic congestion in the Klang Valley worsened due to declining use of public transport. The use of public transport has reduced from 34% in 1985 to the present 16% while the use of private cars has increased from 47% to 71% for the same period.
To address the problem, Chan said among the projects in progress were the building of physical infrastructure to connect various modes of public transport and standardising ticketing systems for buses and trains.
The one-ticket-one-fare system will be implemented by the middle of next year.
Commuters will have the convenience of buying only one type of ticket and can go on stage buses, LTR, Komuter and monorail, he said, adding his Ministry would receive an allocation worth RM1.85bil under Budget 2005.
