Jetsetter Klinsmann defends trips to the US

BERLIN: German national coach Jurgen Klinsmann has defended his decision to keep the United States as his base, insisting he is not neglecting his duties by spending so much time away from Germany.

The 40-year-old jetted to his Californian home immediately after last Wednesday's 1-1 draw with Brazil in Berlin prompting criticism from several quarters.

“He should not be flying straight back to Los Angeles after international matches,” slammed VfL Bochum coach Peter Neururer. “He should stick around and analyse the game and talk to the Bundesliga clubs.”

Former Bayern Munich star Klinsmann, who worked in sports marketing in the United States after his retirement in 1998, claimed people were over reacting.

“Sometimes people think too negatively in Germany,” Klinsmann told magazine SportBild.

“That is why it is important for me to get a view from the outside.

“If I sat around in Frankfurt all the time I would only get a view from inside.”

With the 2006 World Cup on home soil Klinsmann is keen to make some notes on potential opponents.

“My job as German coach is to fly to places such as Brazil, Argentina or Mexico to get a closer look,” added Klinsmann.

“The German Football Federation (DFB) has ten other coaches who can observe Bundesliga matches.”

While Klinsmann's Americanised training methods and flights back to the United States have caused controversy, he has enjoyed a promising start as German coach with a 3-1 win over Austria followed by a 1-1 draw with world champions Brazil. – AFP
