Tsunami virtually chased DiGi CEO

PUTRAJAYA: Morten Lundal was among those who personally experienced the wrath of Sunday’s deadly tsunami.

The CEO of DiGi Telecommunications was on vacation in Langkawi with his wife Sarah and two children, Mandius and Liam, when he was virtually chased by the tsunami.

“It really made me realise how fragile life is and how we should not take what we have for granted,” he said yesterday.

The tsunami, he said, was “very deceptive” as it looked beautiful when the first wave came rolling in while he was in the hotel swimming pool with his five-year-old son Liam.

Morten with his sons Liam (left) and Mandius relating their experience at their house in Kajang yesterday.
“The wave looked so inviting and harmless – even from about 20m away. I can understand why many were drawn to it and did not try to run away until it was too late.

“Even I was drawn to go closer to the beach when the first wave rolled in although I told my son to stay put in the pool.

“Luckily, I realised in time how strong the waves were, when I saw palm trees toppling and the jetty being smashed.

“I scooped Liam up from the pool and ran to higher ground before the force of the first wave hit the beach,” he said.

Although no one from the hotel where Lundal and his family were staying was injured, the experience left him in a daze, especially when he realised a few hours later the extent of the devastation.

He said he could not stop thinking about his good fortune, particularly when he read about the thousands of children who had lost their lives.

“I was looking at my children drawing in the garden three days later when I was struck by the need to put what I felt on paper and I came up with a simple poem to express my sorrow.

“What saddened me most was the sheer number of parents who had to bury their children.

“I knew I should do something to help ease some of the burden of those who had suffered tremendous loss in the tragedy,” he added.
