Zahid: Tourism industry unaffected
KUALA LUMPUR: Slight damage to the kitchen and swimming pool of a hotel in Penang – that is about the only setback for the tourism industry in Malaysia as a result of the tsunami on Dec 26.
This was disclosed by Deputy Tourism Minister Datuk Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, when refuting foreign media reports that the tsunami had caused a lot of destruction to the whole of Malaysia.
“The damage to the hotel has since been repaired.
“There have been no cancellation of flight bookings to Penang or Langkawi,” he told reporters after launching a luxury tour bus service called Double Decker Supreme Service here.
The double-decker tour bus, with 30 seats, comes with room for a karaoke session as well as massage chairs. The bus service is provided by Pearl Holiday (M) Travel & Tour Sdn Bhd.
Stating that Malaysia was continuing to draw tourists, Ahmad Zahid said: “Langkawi is the destination for nine chartered flights from Russia and other nearby countries. Six of these flights have already arrived and three more are expected next week.” – Bernama
