MAS going all out to prove it is safe to visit Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is safe and to prove it, Malaysia Airlines will be inviting foreign journalists and travel operators to tour local destinations, especially those affected by the tsunami.
MAS sales, distribution and marketing senior general manager Datuk Abdul Rashid Khan, said they would be organising the familiarisation trips until March, to allay travel advisories on Malaysia put up by several countries.
We want to show foreign media and travel operators that the tsunami impact on Malaysia is minimal and that tourists are safe to travel here, despite advisories issued by countries such as China and Australia.
All our Chinese New Year flights to Penang and Langkawi are already full and we are still flying direct to both places from London.
We are working with Tourism Malaysia and the Tourism Ministry to address this issue as we want to ensure that the advisories wont affect tourism here and accurate information on Malaysia is put forth, he added.
Abdul Rashid said this after briefing the media yesterday on the upcoming MAS travel fair, which would be held concurrently in four states on Feb 19 and 20 from 10am to 10pm.
The fair would be held at Mines International Exhibition and Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur, the International Sports Arena (Penang), Permata Exhibition Centre (Kuching) and Sabah Trade Centre (Kota Kinabalu).
It is expected to draw 180,000 visitors compared to 120,000 at last years inaugural fair.
Abdul Rashid said they expected a turnover of RM100mil for this years fair compared to RM68mil last year.
Each visitor would be charged a RM2 entry fee, most of which would be donated to the Tsunami Relief Fund and other charity organisations.
