Only ‘useful’ volunteers
JOHOR BARU: Aman Malaysia will send only those who are emotionally strong and possess certain skills as volunteers to Aceh.
Its co-ordinator for the tsunami aid programme Datuk Mukhriz Mahathir said they would have to be very strict when selecting the volunteers to avoid “excess baggage.”
“All are welcome to submit your names to us but we will only send those who have skills that would be useful in our mission in Aceh.
“We will also be looking for those who are emotionally tough because we have been made to understand that the situation there is so devastating that some earlier volunteers spent their entire time there crying,” he said here yesterday.
Fund-raising concert
KUALA LUMPUR: A charity concert featuring more than 20 local artistes will be organised to raise funds for the Malaysian Tsunami Tragedy Fund.
The concert – Konsert Kasih – will be staged at Panggung Sari, Istana Budaya, on Jan 17 (for invited guests) and 18 (for the public) at 8.30pm.
Tickets are priced at RM500 for invited guests while prices for the public range between RM50 and RM250.
Artistes such as Anuar Zain, DJ Dave, Ning Baizura, Syafinaz, Man Bai, Nash, KRU and Siti Nurhaliza are among those confirmed for the concert.
Tickets can be purchased at the box office in Istana Budaya and at several Video EZY and Tower Records outlets.

Donation from Iranians
KUALA LUMPUR: The people of Iran, through the Iranian Red Crescent, have donated 23 tonnes of goods, including tents, clothes, blankets and food, to the Malaysian Red Crescent Society (MRCS) for the tsunami victims.
Iranian Embassy press and cultural officer Malek Shafghat said the tsunami had impacted the lives of Iranians who were remembering the first anniversary of the Bam earthquake.
The killer tsunami happened on Dec 26 – exactly a year after a 6.5-magnitude earthquake ripped through Bam and left more than 26,000 dead.
Malaysian is safe
PETALING JAYA: A Malaysian who has been reported missing in Phuket during the Dec 26 tsunami is safe.
Wisma Putra, in a statement last night, said the missing person, Adenan Abu Bakar, had contacted his friend via e-mail and that he is believed to be in Thailand.
The statement said two other Malaysians were still reported missing in Phuket and another in Aceh.
Gerakan chips in
KUALA LUMPUR: The Gerakan Youth entrepreneur bureau will send medicine, mineral water and foodstuff to Sri Lanka.
The bureau has also collected RM33,000, of which RM10,000 would be donated to the UN Children’s Fund while the rest will be used to buy other necessities for the victims in Sri Lanka.
Taoists donate
KUALA LUMPUR: Members of the Federation of Taoist Associations Malaysia yesterday handed over a RM15,000 contribution to Higher Education Deputy Minister Datuk Fu Ah Kiow for the National Disaster Relief Fund.
The federation has donated RM30,000 so far to the victims.
No open houses
KANGAR: There will not be any open houses in Perlis for the coming Hari Raya Adiladha and Chinese New Year celebrations in view of the tsunami tragedy.
10,000 free plane tickets
PETALING JAYA: AirAsia is giving away 10,000 free tickets to nine destinations in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand as a way of thanking its customers for their support over the past three years.
The free one-way tickets are from KLIA to Penang, Kota Baru, Kuala Terengganu, Johor Baru, Alor Star, Haadyai, Jakarta, Bandung and Padang.
The same offer also applies for one-way tickets from these destinations to KLIA.

Indon admits threatening man
KUALA LUMPUR: An Indonesian labourer has pleaded guilty to threatening a security guard here early last week.
Hapas Bunasan, 44, who has permanent resident status, was charged with intimidating Mohammed Rofi Mat Jusoh, 29, with the intention of causing him fear, in front of a house in Jalan Pantai Dalam at 3.30pm on Jan 4.
Magistrate Normazaida Ahmad Narihan set Feb 16 for sentencing.
Residents against project
PUTRAJAYA: A group of six Broga residents handed over a memorandum protesting the government’s plans to build an incinerator in their area to the Prime Minister’s office here yesterday.
The memorandum was handed over by the pro tem chairman of the Group of Broga Residents against the Incinerator Project, Zulkefly Mohamad Omar, to the prime minister's political secretary Dr Vincent Lim.
Abdul Aziz to know fate soon
KUALA LUMPUR: The Sessions Court here will decide whether former Rural Development Ministry secretary-general Datuk Dr Abdul Aziz Muhamad will have to enter his defence in the criminal breach of trust and cheating case involving RM11mil next month.
Sessions Court judge Mohd Zaki Abd Wahab yesterday set Feb 22 to deliver his decision.
Clerk jailed for assault
KUALA LUMPUR: A despatch clerk has been jailed five months for assaulting his girlfriend with a broom and punching and kicking her in the head.
Kamarunizam Ismail, 26, had admitted to causing hurt to Jamilah Yunus, also 26, in their rented room in Lorong Haji Taib 1 at 1am on Dec 6.
