Pirated VCD peddler wounded
PENANG: A 20-year-old pirated VCD seller was admitted to the Penang Hospital in critical condition after he was shot in the chest during a struggle with seven Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs enforcement officers in Gottlieb Road here last night.
In the 9.45pm incident, the slug from an officer's semi-automatic pistol also hit a customer of a nearby coffeeshop in the back after it penetrated the VCD seller’s chest.
The customer, a man in his 50s, was also admitted to the Penang Hospital and was in stable condition.
State CID chief Senior Asst Comm II Syed Ismail Syed Azizan said the incident occurred when the enforcement officers were trying to seize some VCDs the youth was selling outside the coffeeshop.
“There was a struggle which led to an enforcement officer opening fire. The shot was at close range and it penetrated the youth’s chest and hit the patron of a coffeeshop, who was having his dinner, in the back.
“An assortment of items such as the iron stand of the VCD stall, which could have been used as a weapon, were recovered at the scene. We will need to determine if any of these items were used to attack the officers,” he said at the scene.
SAC Syed Ismail said the enforcement officer has made a report at the Datuk Keramat police station, adding that the case was being investigated under Section 37 of the Firearms Act.
Also present were George Town OCPD Asst Comm Hamzah Md Jamil, ASP S. Vijaya Rao, ASP Marvin Tan Seng Kian and ASP Sibie a/k Ribot.
