1,357 pupils begin school session
SUNGAI PETANI: A total of 1,357 pupils in Kota Kuala Muda, who were given a two-week holiday extension after two primary schools were turned into tsunami relief centres and one was inundated with mud deposited by the giant waves on Dec 26, began their school session yesterday.
Kedah Education Committee chairman Datuk Azimi Daim said all 145 pupils of SK Haji Sulaiman, 663 of SK Kota Kuala Muda and 549 of SK Seri Kuala turned up in their school uniforms.
Of the total students, 595 were directly affected by the tsunami that destroyed or damaged their houses and washed away their belongings including school uniforms and books, he said.
Azimi said the affected students were given new uniforms and school gear worth RM200 each by the state Education Department and would receive sports attire worth RM100 donated by the state government. – Bernama
