Temporary homes in Kota Kuala Muda ready for tsunami victims

PUTRAJAYA: Tsunami victims in Kota Kuala Muda, Kedah, can start moving into 67 units of temporary homes in time for Hari Raya Aidil Adha on Friday.

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen said Syarikat Perumahan Negara Bhd (SPNB) had already built 17 units of temporary homes there and another 50 would be ready by today.

“For victims in Penang, 80 units of temporary homes will be completed in two weeks’ time.

“SPNB will also carry out repairs worth around RM1.1mil on 186 houses damaged by the tsunami in Kedah and four others in Bagan Datoh, Perak,” she told reporters after receiving a RM500,000 cheque for the National Disaster Relief Fund in aid of tsunami survivors from the Totalisator Board Malaysia at her office here yesterday.

Dr Ng said SPNB would need RM70mil to build permanent homes for these victims.

“Under Budget 2005, SPNB has already been allocated RM100mil for the construction of homes for the needy. We will ask that the tsunami victims be given priority under this allocation,” she said.

Tsunami victims wishing to apply for permanent homes, she added, should forward their requests to SPNB.

“Those who already have land should obtain application forms from their state governments and assemblymen. So far, 20 victims have applied.

“Those without land would have to wait until we get word from the state governments as land matters come under their purview,” she said.
