Koh: Penangites prudent, but definitely not stingy
PENANG: The generosity Penangites have shown to the tsunami victims belies their kiam siap (stingy) image.
Chief Minister Tan Sri Dr Koh Tsu Koon said Penangites opened their wallets wide and gave liberally in aid for the victims.
Penang people are definitely not kedekut (stingy). Yes we are prudent and careful with money.
But we save our money to spend it wisely for a worthy cause including welfare, education and charity, he said at the Tsunami Charity Dinner at Tanjung Country Club here on Wednesday night.
We would like this spirit of helping and caring to continue, he said in his speech.
Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Rahman Abbas was guest of honour at the dinner.
A total of RM139,697.80 was donated to the TYT Disaster Relief Fund.
Among the donors was 70-year-old Lean Ee Moy who parted with her savings of RM1,356 as she wanted to do her bit to help the victims.
Tanjung Country Club raised RM56,000 from the dinner, Purerich Realty Bhd donated RM52,251.80, Geovalley Sdn Bhd donated RM20,000 and Wong Sik Bee and fashion designer Randy Goh each donated RM5,000.
Twelve models also paraded in Randy Goh Collection outfits that were auctioned to raise money for the TYT Disaster Relief Fund.
Dr Koh said a sophisticated early warning system would not guarantee public safety if there was no co-ordination to warn the people.
He said thousands of lives were saved in Batu Feringghi because the baywatch team and beach boys were quick to warn picnickers and hotel guests when they received information from Langkawi which was first hit by the killer waves.
No deaths were recorded in Batu Feringghi because everybody along the 2km stretch of beachfront was evacuated on time, thanks to a well-coordinated effort between the baywatch team, the beach boys and the hoteliers, he said.
