Fishermen ready to take up nets by end February
KUALA KEDAH: All tsunami-affected fishermen in Penang and Kedah are expected to go back to sea by the end of next month.
Deputy Agriculture and Agro-based Industry Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shariff Omar said the ministry through its Fishermen Fund was helping the fishermen replace or repair their boats, engines and nets.
Tsunami-affected fishermen who previously operated without a licence should apply for it to enable them to gain access to the RM1mil fund, he said.
He said the Government would assist in the licensing process to ensure fishermen could continue with their livelihood.
However these fishermen must follow regulations, he said after launching a fish eating campaign here yesterday.
About 1,000 people were served with a variety of seafood including fish.
Pensioner Shuib Hashim, 50, said the campaign was timely to allay fears of eating seafood.
Housewife Che Enan Awang, 47, from Kampung Seberang Kota, here said that her family had ignored rumours that fish was unsafe to eat.
