Hisham: We will tackle shortage of teachers
SUNGAI PETANI: The Education Ministry will take appropriate measures to overcome the shortage of teachers in vernacular schools nationwide, minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said.
“I am aware of the recent request made by the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP) over the shortage. I have also looked at requests made by others,” he said when asked for comments on a recent statement by the union over the matter.
Hishammuddin was speaking to reporters after giving away beef to tsunami victims at Kampung Keda in Kota Kuala Muda, here yesterday. The event was organised by Umno Youth in conjunction with Hari Raya Haji.
NUTP secretary-general Lok Yim Pheng had recently asked the ministry to take immediate steps to overcome the serious shortage of teachers in vernacular schools nationwide.
Lok said this in response to the issue raised by Kuala Muda/ Yan parent-teacher associations in Kedah on the shortage of 112 teachers in 23 Tamil schools in Kuala Muda and Yan districts.
On another issue, he said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi had given approval for 100 teachers from Aceh to be trained in the country's teachers' training colleges.
At another function here later, Deputy Education Minister Datuk Hon Choon Kim said the shortage of teachers in Chinese schools had been gradually solved over the years except for certain schools which still faced the problem.
The shortage occurred when 3,451 teachers in Chinese schools were either promoted or given new positions between 2002 and 2003, including 1,027 appointed as counsellors, he told reporters after giving away financial aid to six fully-aided Chinese schools.
Hon said seven new Chinese schools were built and 44 had either been relocated or repaired from 1999 until last year, costing the Government a total of RM79.8mil.
