Travel mart to help turn the negative tide
LANGKAWI: The exhibition and forum to be held during the Asean Travel Exchange (Travex) are timely following the Dec 26 tsunami and earthquake which hit the region.
Penang Tourism Development and Environment committee chairman Teng Chang Yeow said a session on tsunami would be added to one of the forum's agenda if there was consensus among the delegates.
It is hoped that the forum will bring about better co-operation among the tsunami-hit countries in the region.
Through such efforts, a concerted direction in addressing the tourism pitfalls can be realised, he said yesterday.
Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Malaysia/Brunei director Sommas Siriwong said TAT would host a session with the media on Jan 27 to explain the current situation at Thai tourist spots hit by the tsunami.
She said there would be a video presentation of the post-tsunami situation in Phuket and Krabi to show that things there were back to normal.
Tight security will be observed at the venue of the Travex the Mahsuri International Exhibition Centre. The three-day travel mart, to start from Wednesday, will be attended by 1,011 sellers and 400 buyers of Asean tourism products and services.
Visitors would be screened for weapons. Their bags will also have to go through a scanner set up by Anfort Corporation Sdn Bhd, which has been entrusted with the security set up of the venue.
Its manager Shahidir Hasbullah said the scanner could detect firearms, explosives or even drugs.
The scanning of baggage and visitors to the exhibition is a standard requirement, he said after briefing security personnel on the usage of the scanner.
A check at the centre also showed that workers were racing against time to complete the booths for Travex. There are 510 booths with Malaysian sellers taking up 173.
Thailand, which had been hard hit by tsunami, is taking advantage of Travex to go all out in addressing its setback.
It is taking 127 booths, the second largest in participation after host Malaysia.
