District office to act against bogus victims making claims
ALOR STAR: Action will be taken against unscrupulous people who claim they are tsunami victims, the Kota Star district office warned.
District officer Datuk Ismail Hamid said the district office had come across several dubious reports and that his office would be investigating them.
Each claim must be accompanied by a police report and we will investigate all claims.
It is a shame that some people choose to exploit the misfortune of others for their own selfish needs, he said.
Ismail said damages had been estimated at RM2mil, covering boats, jetties, fishing nets and boat engines.
He said assessment on damages incurred in the Kota Star district was almost done and that it would be submitted to the state secretariat.
He said more than 300 people, mostly fishermen, were affected by the tsunami in three areas in the district, namely Kuala Sala, Kuala Kangkong and Kuala Kedah.
