Malacca fund collects RM750,000

MALACCA: Tabung Bencana Alam Tsunami Kerajaan Negeri Melaka, a fund set up by the state government and Bistari – a welfare body of wives of the Malacca elected representatives – has collected RM750,000 in cash and kind in four days.

Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said RM500,000 would be sent to the Kedah, Penang, Perlis and Perak state governments directly.

“In this way, tsunami victims can be helped immediately and they need not wait,” said Mohd Ali.

He added that the remaining RM250,000 would be sent to Sri Lanka and Banda Aceh in Indonesia.

He said the fund would continue to accept donations until further notice.

In Johor Baru, more donations poured in for the Aceh earthquake and tsunami victims from caring Malaysians, with more than 100 tonnes of clothing and food collected by the Johor Umno Youth movement.

The movement had set up collection centres in Johor Baru, Air Hitam and Muar since Dec 28.

Coordinator for the Johor Baru collection centre, Khalid Mohamad, said they had received more than 50 tonnes of clothing and food items.

The collection centres in Muar and Air Hitam had received 37 and 13 tonnes worth of clothing and food items respectively.
