Tsunami-related news in brief

NEW YORK: Malaysia Airlines (MAS) is assisting Sri Lankan expatriates here to send medical supplies and relief workers to the tsunami-hit island.

Area vice-president Malkeet Singh said the move came about after a friend told the MAS area chief that his office was stacked with medical supplies, clothing and foodstuff but that he had no means of sending it all to Sri Lanka.

“I immediately offered him our cargo facilities at 50% discount. I am also planning to offer discounted airfares for medical and relief workers who are going there,” he said on Saturday.

PETALING JAYA: Air cargo company Transmile Air sent a plane-load of supplies to Sri Lanka yesterday.

Transmile Air operation manager A. Palaraman said the company had absorbed the RM190,000 cost of transporting 22 tonnes of items such as mineral water, medicine, candles and blankets.

Palaraman added that religious organisations and groups that needed to transport goods to Banda Aceh, Colombo, Phuket and India could contact him at 012-2076980 or Lee Sok Khoon at 016-2018006.

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah wants to be included in the Federal Government's early tsunami warning system.

Responding to queries on the necessity for Sabah to be part of the system due to the state's proximity to earthquake-prone Philippines, Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman said yesterday:

“We will be seeking advice from the Federal Government on the matter.”

PETALING JAYA: Uncle Lim’s, a contemporary kopitiam (coffee shop), has pledged to donate a day's taking to The Star Earthquake/Tsunami Relief Fund.

Co-owner Datuk Goh Seng Toh said the event would be held at the Subang Parade outlet located at the ground floor of the mall on Thursday from 10am to 10pm.

JEDDAH: The massive devastation caused by the tsunami waves, has not deterred Arab tourists from coming to Malaysia this year.

Malaysia’s Consul-General here Zulkifli Yaacob said that there were no cancellations of holiday bookings by Arab tourists. – Bernama
