Some Kedah fishermen file phoney damage claims
ALOR STAR: The Kedah Fishermen Association has come across several false reports filed by fishermen on damage in-curred after the tsunami struck the state's coastline last Sunday.
Association chairman Jusoh Awang said the reports included one requesting for aid for a boat damaged before the disaster.
“We received a report from a fishermen’s association claiming that the boat was damaged by the tsunami when it was not,” he said.
Jusoh hoped the government would conduct thorough investigations on all claims made by the fishermen.
He said this when commenting on a statement by Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Syed Razak Syed Zain that there were false and overlapping claims from fishermen after the disaster.
Syed Razak cited a case in which several fishermen had submitted claims for the same boat.
“We will investigate such claims as we want to ensure that aid goes to only those deserving them,” he said when met after handing over foodstuff to 315 fishermen in Kuala Kedah here yesterday.
The fishermen were among those in Kedah whose boats were damaged by the giant waves.
Syed Razak said the state government would also check damage reports submitted by tsunami victims with village leaders to ensure there was no overlapping or false claims.
