Negri wants Waad’s datukship revoked
BY SIMON KHOOSEREMBAN: The Negri Sembilan government will ask the state ruler to revoke the Datukship conferred on former Gemencheh state assemblyman Datuk Waad Mansor, following his conviction on corruption charges.
The state government would propose the move to Yang di-Pertuan Besar Tuanku Ja'afar Tuanku Abdul Rahman, said Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.
This was in line with a decision made by the state government in June last year with regards to recipients of state awards who are convicted, he told reporters after launching a state tsunami fund-raising drive at the Allson Klana Resort here yesterday.
He added, however, that it was up to the Yang di-Pertuan Besar to decide on Waad's status.
On Tuesday, the Federal Court ordered that a RM45,000 fine imposed on Waad, who is also an ex-state executive councillor, be converted into a two-year jail sentence for each of three counts of corrupt practices he faced.
The Court also ordered the jail sentences to run concurrently and asked for the fine, if already paid by Waad, to be refunded to him.
Describing the matter as rather unfortunate, Mohamad said it should not have happened in the first place.
We hope all present and future recipients of state awards will take heed and not commit any wrongdoing to avoid being stripped of their titles, he said.
Meanwhile, a total of RM2.1mil was collected for the fund-raising drive from the state government, the private sector and individuals, in aid of the tsunami victims.
Mohamad said the amount exceeded the state government's target of RM1mil.
He said one-fourth of the collection would go to affected states Penang, Kedah and Perak while the rest of the money would be handed over to the Government for distribution.
