Airspace open to four nations

PORT KLANG: Australia, the United States, Britain and Japan have been given permission to use the country's airspace as well as three airports in their relief efforts to help the earthquake and tsunami victims, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“We will give them our co-operation. The Cabinet has agreed to allow these nations to fly their planes over our airspace as well as the use of three landing sites,” said Najib.

These countries would be allowed to use the Subang, Butterworth and Langkawi airports as transit points.

He added that the Cabinet also agreed to allow the use of army assets to aid the United Nations Food Programme.

Amongst other things, the Cabinet agreed to let the UN use its helicopters and designated aircraft in helping transport needful materials to the affected countries.

“The programme has specifically requested for a field hospital, complete with an operation theatre, to be set up in Aceh.

“The army has been directed to get its medical team to get ready,” Najib told reporters after sending off the KD Mahawangsa, to the Kruenggeu kueh port in Aceh.

Also present were Bakti president Datin Paduka Endon Mahmud, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali who represented the Mahathir family and Yayasan Iskandar, Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo, Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy and Indonesian Ambassador Rusdihardjo.

The ship left Wharf 16 of Northport here with 550 tonnes of food, medicine, two bulldozers, three backhoes as well as a Pajero 4WD vehicle.
