Fishermen given aid contribute to fund

KANGAR: They are among those hit by the tsunami disaster, but fishermen from Kuala Sungai Baru here donated between RM10 and RM50 each shortly after receiving aid from the Government.

In a rare move, they willingly donated the money to the state tsunami disaster fund, officially launched on Wednesday.

Touched by their gesture, Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim described it as “historic.”

During a ceremony at the Heritage Hall here on Wednesday, Shahidan had presented aid totalling RM205,000 to 173 fishermen.

While still onstage, a majority of the recipients dug into their pockets and handed over their contributions to the Mentri Besar after receiving the aid.

To honour their action, Kuala Perlis assemblyman Bakar Saad went up to the microphone and started announcing the names of the donors.

Soon afterwards, government department directors who were present also went onstage to hand over the contributions on behalf of their respective departments.

The function raised RM63,000 for tsunami victims, of which Perlis Plantations Bhd donated RM50,000.

At least 500 fishermen from Kuala Sungai Baru, Kuala Sanglang and Kuala Perlis here were affected by the giant waves thatdestroyed or damaged their boats, nets and equipment.

A total of 157 inshore fishermen received RM1,000 while 16 trawler owners received RM3,000.

Shahidan said the contributions would be channelled to the state-level disaster fund before being handed over to the Federal Government.
