Hisham offers education aid to Indonesia

PUTRAJAYA: Education Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein has offered assistance to his Indonesian counterpart to help rebuild Aceh’s education system.

Hishammuddin spoke to Indonesia’s Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo over the phone and stated Malaysia’s willingness to help out in any way possible.

“I have asked my officers to contact their colleagues in Indonesia to find out what form of assistance is needed. After we have met local needs, we are prepared to help our neighbouring country,” he said after receiving aid for schoolchildren affected by the tsunami disaster.

The minister expressed his pride at the way schools, teachers and parents had coped with the after-effects of the tsunami.

“Four schools were damaged by the tsunami but two of them managed to operate according to schedule while one will only be ready to take in students on Jan 17.

“The date for the other school cannot be determined yet as it is serving as a shelter for people displaced by the tsunami.”

He also announced that the ministry had waived school fees for 2,086 students from Kedah and Penang who were affected by the tsunami.

Earlier Hishammuddin met teachers Che Husin Ismail and Roselina Abdullah, whose eight-month-old baby Muhammad Adib Irfan is suffering from a congenital heart problem.

The Government has contributed RM330,000 to pay for his treatment at the Royal Hospital for Children in Sydney, Australia.
