Special kids with a heart
PETALING JAYA: Their faces beamed as each of them carefully put RM20, which is their pocket money and cash gifts, into envelopes for the tsunami survivors.
The amount collected came up to RM480 from the 24 children of the Taman Megah’s Handicapped And Disabled Children’s Home for The Star Earthquake/Tsunami Relief Fund on Thursday.
M. Manishadevie, 14, said she and her best friend T. Dharshny, 16, had encouraged others at the home to collect money for the victims after reading about them in the newspapers.
“We read about how they lost everything including their houses. It made us so sad. So, we decided to donate this.
“It is our RM2 pocket money that we collected since school started on Monday –instead we take food from the home when we go to school,” said Manishadevie.

In Subang Jaya, Uncle Lim’s Cafe at the Subang Parade shopping complex collected RM9,364.44 from patrons who donated generously to the fund on Thursday.
Cafe owner Brig Gen (R) Datuk Goh Seng Toh said he hoped the cafe’s effort would start a chain reaction.
The cafe’s consultant Michael Lim said they hoped to create awareness for the cause among their customers.
Donations also came from several corporate bodies for the fund yesterday.
Bonia Corporation Bhd contributed RM100,000 while Ericsson Malaysia donated RM66,760 and Altera Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd in Bayan Lepas gave RM120,000.
Bonia group finance director Chong Chin Look said he hoped the money donated to the fund would be used for medicine to treat the survivors.
Ericsson South East Asia vice-president of communications Tengku Alina Ibrahim-Eddy said the company raised over RM30,000 in the week-long donation drive and the company matched the amount raised by the employees.
She added that they had set up a room where the staff could hand over donations in cash or kind, or even request for salary deductions.
In Penang, caring citizens who call themselves “ACT Altera Community Team” from Altera Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd in Bayan Lepas contributed RM120,000.
ACT chairman Yap Chee Fai said out of the sum donated, RM95,000 came from the company’s headquarters in the United States.
“The rest was collected from the 400 staff in our Penang manufacturing plant,” he said.
Yesterday’s collection in the northern region totalled RM275,986.
