SUBANG JAYA: A total of 250 police personnel from various units will be sent to Banda Aceh to provide assistance to the tsunami victims.

The first batch of 125 personnel left for the devastated Indonesian province yesterday afternoon.

Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Bakri Omar, who saw them off at the Subang Air Force base, said the remaining 125 personnel would be sent after the first batch returns from Banda Aceh.

“The two teams comprise personnel from the Field Force, Federal Reserve Unit, marine, forensic and the VAT69 commando unit,” he said.

“They will be on a two-week search and rescue mission there. We are also sending two boats, six Land Rovers and two water trailers.”

“We will also provide medical and food supplies including baby food to the victims,” he added.

He said he also sympathised with their Indonesian counterparts in Aceh where over 700 of their police personnel died in the tsunami hit.
