Radio listeners’ SMS donations

PETALING JAYA: Airtime Management and Programming Sdn Bhd (AMP) radio listeners did their bit for the tsunami victims when their SMS (short message service) contributions came to more than RM500,000.

A statement yesterday said that AMP, a subsidiary of Astro All Asia Networks (Astro) had collected a donation of RM523,452 from listeners to their seven FM radio stations.

Bike race to raise funds

PETALING JAYA: Some of the country’s bikers and drivers will burn rubber at the Sepang F1 Circuit on Jan 16 in a special track day to raise funds for the tsunami victims.

“The response so far has been overwhelming. In fact, the idea to have this programme originated from some racers, who felt that it is our moral responsibility to do our bit to help the victims,” said Sepang International Circuit general manager Ahmad Mustafa.

Studies will not be disrupted

JOHOR BARU: Malaysian students in Aceh who were affected by the tsunami will receive help to find new places to continue their studies in Indonesia.

Deputy Higher Education Minister Datuk Fu Ah Kiow said yesterday that the Government had established contacts with the relevant authorities to compile a list of “suitable” universities for the students. There were at least 17 Malaysians who were studying in Banda Aceh.

600 victims to return home

SUNGAI PETANI: Six hundred tsunami-affected families from 13 villages in Kota Kuala Muda who are now seeking temporary shelter in five relief centres will return home by Jan 16.

Pantai Merdeka state assemblyman Dr Shuib Saedin said yesterday that another 150 families, whose houses were destroyed by the tsunami, would move into temporary houses now being built at Padang Katong.

Sultan delays birthday bash

ALOR STAR: The Sultan of Kedah Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah has postponed his birthday celebration on Jan 16 out of respect for the tsunami victims.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Syed Razak Syed Zain, who announced this yesterday, said a new date would be fixed later and the state public holiday on Jan 16 would also be postponed.
