Endon returns home from US treatment

KUALA LUMPUR: The Prime Minister's wife, Datin Seri Endon Mahmood, has returned home from Los Angeles after undergoing treatment for breast cancer there.

Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said his wife was healthy but weak.

Endon, he added, had been admitted to the Putrajaya Hospital for observation.

“She arrived safely yesterday (Saturday) and she was tired. The family decided it's better to send her to the hospital for close observation.

“If there's anything to be done or if anything happens suddenly, the doctors can attend to her immediately,” he told reporters after opening the 52nd General Assembly of the People's Progressive Party.

“Endon's condition is not serious. She is still resting. She said she is not ready to receive visitors. I'm sorry, in such a situation, the doctors advised me to guard against possible secondary infections.”

Abdullah said cancer patients who have undergone chemotherapy treatment could not receive visitors who had infections such as flu because the body's immune system was still weak.

Endon left for Los Angeles in June for the Abraxene chemotherapy treatment, which was not available in Malaysia but had been proven to be effective for breast cancer.

Abdullah said when he visited his wife last month, Endon had expressed her wish to return to Malaysia to welcome the Ramadan fasting month and to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“I told her that if the doctor has no objections, it's okay, everything depends on the doctor. When the doctors examined her, they decided she can come back,” he said.

Abdullah, who appeared cheerful and happy when fielding reporters' questions, said the return journey from Los Angeles had made Endon tired.

Endon discovered she had breast cancer after her twin sister Noraini was diagnosed with the ailment in early 2003. Since then, Endon has been going to the United States for follow-up treatment. – Bernama
