MyKad reader a hot seller
BY M. KRISHNAMOORTHY
PETALING JAYA: Darell Wong did not quite expect the key ring reader, which comes in many colours, to be such a hot seller.
But sales were boosted when members of the public wanted to check the information contained in their MyKad.
“It is interesting that people are passing around the IST MyReader to check information,” said Wong, who is the marketing manager with IST Smart Technology Sdn Bhd which manufactures the reader.
The reader can display certain information contained in the MyKad such as the IC number (both old and new), address, driving licence details and passport information.

USER FRIENDLY: The IST MyReader comes in different colours and can read information stored in MyKad. |
“It is very user-friendly. It is probably the smallest MyKad reader in Malaysia,” said Wong.
Mistakes in data entry have resulted in embarrassing situations.
For example, Wong related the case of a woman who wanted to get married but her marriage registration was rejected because her sex was listed as ''male'' in her new MyKad.
Although it is possible to confirm the data when one collects the card at the National Registration Department (NRD) offices, not many bother to do so.
Although the reader is now only sold at NRD counters at RM22-RM25 depending on location, there are plans to sell an upgraded version in major retail shops and shopping centres nationwide.
The key ring reader is developed by IST Smart Technology in co-operation with the NRD.
