Look glamourous with only basic accessories

Story and photos by CHIN MUI YOON

FORGET the rules handed down by mothers and aunties, but do dress up with care and confidence, fashion stylist and make-up artist Alex Eu advises.

Eu's class on Dressing for Success was a hit at the KL Epicure International 2005 where over 30 people attended his sessions at any one time over the weekend.

Eu demonstrating how a simple scarf adds a touch of femininity.
Interactive, lively and entertaining, Eu shared basic tips on dressing that easily caught on with the women, as he focused on personal style and ways to look glamorous with just a few basic accessories without overspending.

“You should feel good about your dressing and have the confidence to carry it off,” he said.

“Our personality should come through in our dressing. Good dressing should be fun instead of a chore!”

He said every woman should have a quality classic white long-sleeved shirt and black pants in her wardrobe.

Spend more on getting a good jacket that lasts long and which can be enhanced in different ways.

Eu tied a pretty pastel-coloured scarf around his beautiful Brazilian model Patricia's neck, who was wearing a silky white shirt tucked into a well-cut pair of black pants.

Instantly, she looked more alluring and feminine.

A smart, simple black jacket gave her an air of easy confidence without sacrificing professional appeal.

“By tying the same scarf or wearing a simple strand of Furla pearls around your bag, it can change the overall look into one that is stylish,” said Eu.

Wearing the same outfit, Patricia can easily head for a party after work if she has no time to change.

All she needs to do is remove the jacket and wind the pearl necklace around her waist as a casual belt.

A little black, furry handbag enhanced with sequins transforms the look.

Many women fret over their wardrobe when receiving invitations for black-tie dinners.

Eu said cocktail-length dresses are acceptable for most events whereas white-tie events would require long evening dresses while tuxedo is a must for men.

“Dress appropriately for the occasion,” said Eu.

The crowd gasped when Eu waved a pair of dazzling diamante-studded Stuart Weitzman shoes in the air.

“When women wear high-heels, their posture and steps change to being more elegant and feminine. Don't worry that you are walking with a sexy wiggle – men love women in heels!” he said.

“Just get a pair of good shoes that can last a long time. Well-made ones may be expensive, but they slip over your feet like a glove and make us feel expensive and good. If you feel like wearing diamante sandals, by all means do it at any time! A bit of sparkle on our feet is fine.”

He recommended wedge shoes for outdoor garden parties or wedding ceremonies, as they provide added height but do not sink into the soil.

Mules are excellent with traditional costumes.

They are simple yet elegant and with gold or silver tones, you can't go wrong!

Another classic item in a woman's wardrobe should be that little black dress made famous by Hollywood star Audrey Hepburn in the movie Breakfast at Tiffany’s.

It is amazing how something as simple as this black dress can be made more glamorous by draping a little white furry stole around the neck or enhanced with a fuchsia Christian Lacroix shawl with ethnic embroidery.

“Patricia looks ready for the red carpet whether she's in New York, Paris or Kuala Lumpur!” said Eu.

On all the outfits modelled, Eu played with the same accessories such as a pair of dangling gold earrings and the furry black handbag.

Glamorous gowns aside, Eu said jeans do not need to be boring or tasteless.

A Tom Abang Saufi-designed shrug jacket with a tank top over a pair of blue jeans instantly transforms the look from casual to chic.

Eu will be hosting his own show titled How Do I Look that will be aired over Astro Prima by end December.
