Areas picked for pomelo cultivation
Pomelo has been identified as one of 10 tropical fruits for cultivation under programme to enhance the country’s export of food products.
Agriculture and Agro Based Ministry director-general Datuk Khamsiah Muhammad said Tambun and Kuala Kangsar had been earmarked for mass cultivation of pomelo.
The other fruits are papaya, guava, pineapple, watermelon, mango, star fruit, jackfruit and Roselle.
“We have identified these fruits for cultivation under a programme to be known as industrial cluster zone which will be implemented next year.
“The programme introduced by the ministry is aimed at reducing trade balance especially on imported fruits,” she told reporters after launching a good agriculture practice campaign at Tambun Valley Pomeloes orchard in Ipoh yesterday.
“The programme will be a smart partnership between the ministry and private sector. The ministry will identify suitable sites for cultivation of the fruits in various states” she added.
”The sites identified will be accredited with standard of good agriculture practice,'' she said.
