Driving home the point via SMS
BY LEONG SHEN-LI
PETALING JAYA: Road Safety Department director-general Suret Singh is using the personal touch in spreading the message of safe driving during the festive season.
In recent days, he has sent hundreds of SMS, which he combined with Deepavali and Hari Raya greetings, to staff, friends and contacts with the hope that they would forward the messages to others.
I am sending the greetings as a reminder to people to drive safely and to help spread the 'Selamat Culture' that the Transport Ministry is trying to promote, he said yesterday.
Asked what gave him the idea to use SMS, Suret Singh said he had to try all ways and means to promote road safety.
We want to capture the hearts and minds of road users so that they will drive safely, he said.
On the cost incurred in sending the hundreds of SMS, he said it was nothing if the messages could save lives.
Among those who received the messages were Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy and department staff.
Written in template form, part of Suret Singh's message for Hari Raya goes like this:
Pandu Selamat/Drive Safely, Selamat Aidilfitri
Berhati-hati di jalanraya adalah baik untuk lindungi nyawa diri dan pengguna-pengguna lain di jalanraya. (It is good to be careful on the road as it will save your life and that of other road users.)
Together we can make a difference.
Share the Selamat Culture with friends and family for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
