Move to curb road accidents
A PROPOSAL to withhold the licences of motorists blamed for serious road accidents for 14 days will be implemented next year.
The move, to prevent and reduce fatal road accidents, will see amendments to the Road Transport Act to empower enforcement authorities to carry it out.
Among the offences are dangerous driving, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and speeding, Utusan Malaysia quoted Transport Minister Datuk Seri Chan Kong Choy as saying.
“When someone's licence is confiscated, we will issue a receipt to enable the driver to drive his car to the police station. After that, the driver cannot drive for 14 days.
“What happens after that depends on the case. If the driver is found guilty, further legal action will be taken against him,” Chan said.
On a related subject, Kosmo! reported that Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu who had pushed for the speed limit on highways to be increased to 120kph, has changed his stand.
According to the daily, Samy Vellu said the Government would not waver in its decision to maintain the present 110kph speed limit.
