Couple’s saddest Raya

RECOVERY OPERATION: Fire and Rescue personnel working to get the couple’s car out of Sungai Dohol in Kota Tinggi yesterday.
KOTA TINGGI: It has to be Mohd Abdul Basid's and Hasnah Mustapa’s saddest Hari Raya.

Their children Mohd Faiz Ikmal, four, and Nurfatih Izati, three, drowned when the Proton Iswara they were in plunged into Sungai Dohol, off the 63.5km point of Jalan Mersing at 1.30pm yesterday.

Abdul Basid, a 29-year-old printing plant worker, was driving his family back to their hometown in Tanah Merah in Kelantan when he lost control of his car.

“We will take their bodies back to Kelantan for burial,” said Hasnah, 28, when met at the Kota Tinggi Hospital.

The couple sustained only light injuries.

Kota Tinggi traffic police chief Asst Supt Adnan Mohammad Ali said the couple managed to get out of the car as soon as it plunged into the river.

“However, the children were trapped inside,” he added.

He said firemen helped to remove the bodies from the car after it was hauled out.
